Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Sciences
Collaboration with Faculty
KAMS students will join departmental research teams in the
spring of their junior year and work as part of a team during
their senior year in collaboration with a faculty mentor.
The student and mentor will work together to determine each
student’s research project. Students will present their
research during the FHSU Research and Creativity Week, a
showcase for undergraduate research. Students
will also submit their independent research to the Kansas Junior
Academy of Sciences for recognition.
Collaboration with the Business Community
As part of the required colloquia course each semester, students
will interact with national and state business and scientific
leaders, successful alumni from Kansas institutions, and
major Kansas employers in science, technology, engineering
and mathematics disciplines. These opportunities will help
students make decisions about academic majors and expose
them to the wide variety of career opportunities available
in Kansas. In turn, businesses will be encouraged to find
opportunities to mentor and recruit KAMS students through
on-site field trips, special programs and summer internship
opportunities.
Collaboration with Kansas Regents’ Universities
KAMS will actively seek collaboration with other Regents’ universities
to expose students to top-notch academic programs and scholars
within the State of Kansas. During their first year, KAMS students
will participate in colloquia presentations by leading faculty
from Regents’ institutions. During their second year,
students will travel to the Regents’ universities for
college visitations in addition to attending colloquia presentations.
KAMS staff will organize these visits and work with students
to complete college applications and appropriate ACT/SAT testing.
Collaboration with KSDE and K-12 Leaders
As plans continue to be finalized, KAMS staff will gain curriculum
approval from the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE).
KAMS staff will actively seek input in developing and refining
the curriculum from superintendents, building administrators,
teachers and counselors from around the state to ensure the
program best meets the academic and developmental needs of
Kansas students.
