KAMS Director’s Update

What an exciting time for the 26 bright, enthusiastic students who are part of the “pioneer” class at the Academy!!   They began the school year with five days of orientation alongside other new FHSU students.  During orientation, the students attended KAMS and Residence Life sessions and events.

Our Academy students are now in their second week of classes and are working hard in and out of the classrooms.  All of the KAMS students are intent upon excelling at the Academy.  Many students are getting involved in other aspects of the university life as well, including: pre-med club, astronomy club, shooting sports club, government clubs and several religious/church events.  We have six KAMS students who are involved in the FHSU marching band and at least one student involved in vocal music.  FHSU has a great line-up of clubs and organizations that the students can become involved in.

Our Colloquia/seminar weekly meetings that we have scheduled for the students offer a wide range of topics from many different FHSU departments, which include, but are not limited to:

  • A look at the Ben Franklin papers,
  • Science Café presentations,
  • Atmospheric change,
  • Stress and time management,
  • Test prep & test taking,
  • Previews of many different FHSU departments, and
  • Research and internship opportunities

During the 2009/2010 school year, our students will have many diverse opportunities within the University, around the community and in the state.  One of the community opportunities includes volunteer opportunities at the Hays Humane Society.

We are gearing up for our fall information sessions throughout the state, which start next week and go thru the end of October.  We have many students throughout the state who have registered to attend the information sessions and our KAMS Preview Day, and who are working on applications for the 2010/2011 KAMS class.

We look forward to having our second KAMS class join our “pioneer” class on the FHSU campus.  If you know any individual that would benefit from being a student of the Academy, please pass information about KAMS to them.  We would be very interested in sharing information about the Academy with them.

Because of the current economic situation, we are always open to individuals that would like to help the Academy in any way.  Give us a call or drop us an e-mail and we will be more than happy to talk about ways you can assist our program.

As we proceed with the Academy, you will hear about some of the awesome things that our KAMS students are doing.  We look forward to sharing these things with you and will keep you updated about the bright future of our students and of the great future of the Academy.

If you happen to be in the area, please drop by, we would love to give you a tour of the Academy and FHSU!!
